Review: Mallari

Image
Spoilers ahead. Mallari holds a lot of promise. It's said that he predates Jack the Ripper, the most famous serial killer in the world. While Severino Mallari is not as known he's infamous for being the first (documented) serial killer in the PH.  I really wished the writers have stopped there. They could have literally wrote an entire film with that simple premise but they had to do so many things at once the severity of his crimes have then taken a back seat. There's so many elements in the film that it felt like they wanted to throw everything in the pot to cater to different demographics all at once.  Subtlety would have saved Mallari in my opinion. There are expositions that are kind of OK not to explain, like calling themselves travelers and then eventually it was astral projection even if they can take some things? I didn't know you can astral project blankets and videotapes. They needed to show things in some, and probably not pay too much attention to things th...

CAVITE DIARIES: Yoki's Farm (04.09.2021)

Image
While Paradizoo is popular amongst families, there's another farm within the vicinity that is also good enough for a lazy afternoon even if it's one of those temperatures you just want to do siesta.  Right off the bat, I liked that they have have enough parking for large parties. We arrived past lunchtime and there's still a lot of slots available even if visitors pour in regularly. It's probably because of the pandemic, but all groups are required to have a guide (100/group) so they can regulate where people can go. As of writing you are not allowed to lounge endlessly on an area nor are you able to roam around on your own because they want to separate visitors in their own bubbles. Even the moments that we had to be in an enclosed room, we had to wait for a group to get out before we're allowed to come in.  Based off of the story of a friend, in Paradizoo, you are allowed to pet animals as a tourism feature. They do have it in Yoki's, however their animal sele...

IKEA PH: A Review

Image
Image from IKEA PH website I was not supposed to book a reservation but when i received the email, I'm glad I did. It's a bit worrying though because we were exposed to so many people at once! I'm just hoping we didn't get a Covid Freebie. Reservations are a must for going to IKEA. We've booked on the 3rd day of it's opening 11/28/2021 at 10 AM. We arrived there with no fuss, there was no line yet. We parked on the ground floor (it's paid parking! we've parked there around 8AM and left at 2PM = 90 PHP) and we've tried to park very near the entrance.  We have not eaten yet so decided to find somewhere to eat. There's a stairs that leads to the ground floor (but we're already on the ground?) which upon getting to the guards a group of older people were complaining on where they're supposed to queue because no one seemed to have a clue. It was funny that they got there earlier than us and was already expecting to be in line even though their...

Gatting myself Vaxxed with AstraZeneca via HealthNOW

Image
I have been living in my current place for more than 7 years now and I have no IDs related to this place that one of my neighbors joked if I was really a resident here. Well of course I was but I purposely had all my IDs and bank records use our family address as my permanent address because I wanted to keep my records as outdated as I could to prevent any hits with my NBI Clearance*. It is for that reason that it kept me from ever signing up with MandaVAX because I have no ID to prove my residency here. I was supposed to attempt, but on my first try, the server was down and even before I tried again, my agency has already sent us an email regarding them providing us vaccines as well. It took a while but once I was scheduled, there wasn't any hitch.  We are partnered with HealthNOW which I think is connected to Ayala (?) and they have this app that you sign in and have yourself scheduled. The app is very much intuitive and it sends relevant SMS reminders. It needs some improvement ...

Musical Review: Sweeney Todd

Image
I have always wanted to hear Leah on stage because I have heard good things. So when Sweeney Todd appeared on my feed we immediately got tickets! Based from past experiences with Lion King and Wicked we got those ones a bit further from the stage, just enough to be able to see all angles.  The play starts with a long "commercial" of the actors walking on the stage looking for something. At the end they revealed it to be a very good reminder of keeping unnecessary distractions out of bay.  As expected Leah has exceeded all of my expectations. She's just ridiculously good. Her intonation, her singing, her pronunciation is crystal clear. However, I couldn't say the same with some of her co-stars. Some lose their accent midway, some sings garbled, and some I simply could not understand. The only reason I was able to follow what was happening is because I knew beforehand the Johnny Depp movie, even up to the songs I should expect to be sung. I wish I were a...

Bag Review: Doughnut

Image
Woah woah woah! As I've recently said in the notes of the blog before this, I did stop bringing bags in the office BUT, I found this gem right before I started the practice. I've been using it as much as I can prior and love it when we were travelling* and even on weekdays when I go out. So not that that's out of the way, here it is: I think it's serendipity but my wallet says, are you serious? So I was just strolling at Megamall on an OT weekend and thought hey must work these legs as I've been sitting for a long time already.  There are three pockets outside, one in the middle and two at the side, possibly for umbrellas and a water bottle. Inside there's mirrored pockets on the side also, which I often put my phone and a powerbank. On the flap side of the bag, there's layers of pockets for the small things you want organized. I keep cables, cards, floss, small wallets, lipstick, etc on it. My most favorite pocket would hav...

Psych

Image
I've always wanted to watch this show in full ever since I've seen it in when I was really young at Diva (I think). So colored me excited when I saw this also available in Amazon Prime! I immediately started watching episode to episode after I finished The Office and it was an amazing experience. Watching it in 2019 the jokes still land and I felt like I've went through the past years of my life, Psych is just rife with pop culture it's impossible not to relate to what was happening at the moment. I particularly loved the London episode because Gus was such a Potterhead and the Twin Peaks parody of sorts (which is in my To Watch list since forever). Psych started with a really simple plot. Shawn Spencer and Burton "Gus" Guster are best friends who started a detective agency only that Shawn pretends to be a psychic (hence Psych) and lends their services to the Santa Barbara Police Department to solve (mostly) murder cases. Together with Shawn's f...

Theater Play: Coriolano

Image
Based on a Shakesperian tragedy Coriolanus, Coriolano is it's Filipino adaptation which as I've researched performed as in Wikipedia in times of political turmoil. Talk about being extremely timely. As much as I would like to delve into that there's too much noise around it already so let's just discuss the play instead. *Spoilers at this paragraph down here: Here's a compressed plot: Coriolano was a courageous Roman general who was enjoying success on merit. His downfall started when he was pushed by his mother to politics unto which his detractors defeat him through gossip and lies which again wasn't a difficult feat because he was already infamous among the masses being impatient towards them and short tempered. At his lowest he found himself amongst the enemies, joined them to defeat the Romans until his mom Volumnia convinces him to spare them. This obviously didn't sit well with the side who held him up at his lowest and so he was killed. S...

Shopping: Owndays

Image
Some weeks back I've now gotten a new pair of glasses. The one I currently use already have recognizable scratches and I thought maybe it's time for another prescription. The one nearest my house is Ojo but I don't get a lot of good reviews from there and I am not keen in buying from the traditional ones too (EO, Vision Express) for a very good reason I'd say in a bit. I ended up going to Owndays since it's on my walking route. I'm anxious in going to shops where there are more assistants than buyers so it took a long time to finally look around. When I did I just decided to suck it up and look at some frames. I was so nervous in fact that I got one of the first frames I was presented. Not until my eye exam was over did I ask if I could still change frames because I fondly remember it not framing my face well. I'm not sure if my assistant hated that I chose a frame almost 2k less but hey, in all fairness to me I did end up with something that lo...

Ballet Philippines: The Tales of the Manuvu

Image
Not until I was seated did I realize that I have not seen a ballet performance before-- and the one with Lisa Macuja at Star City does not count I think (that was ages ago too!). Since it's my first time to watch I DIDN'T KNOW that ballets could (at this point I'm still guessing) have opening performanceS. Yes, that's not a typo, a large S because there were 4. Concerts have it, so far the musicals I've been to didn't have any so color me surprised when on the second performance it confused me a lot on what happened to the colorful costumes I've been seeing on their posters and the narrative I'm supposed to be seeing. There's a lot of tone colors, blacks and reds. I remembered skimming through the program and seeing something about "The Beginning of All Things". I certainly did not felt it on the first performance nor at the last and the third one made it all the more confusing when it's about a mother. Is this some allegor...

Public Projects: Paranaque Interchange Terminal (PITX)

Image
One of the things that I have envied from our travel to KL a few years back was how surprised I was in their bus hub. It was very neat, even better than most of our domestic airports. Comparatively, our bus stops are even worse than that: dingy, inefficient, lack of everything: seats, clean working bathrooms and capable staff. I remembered we found ourselves on a bus terminal at a certain province asking which bus to take to where. Each guy we ask all have various answers to where. We spent a whole lot of time running around finding which is the correct one! It's not even an isolated thing! It's a common problem with our bus terminals you'd rarely get correct information. This could be an issue as well when you try to visit Cavite, there's so many buses it's daunting which to take especially if you barely have a minute to ask along EDSA. I'm glad I lived there all my life so I know when the bus driver is just lying so you'd take the next bus instead o...

Shopping: Simply Modular PH

Image
I talked this over with Reagan who told me to wait a few days to ensure that I'm really decided. I knew I was the first time I've held a sample of those panels so I just spent that time planning on what configuration I would like to have and obsessing what kit I would buy. They had a 10% promo back then and my plan was to get 2 sets of 15+6 to a bargain price of 15k++! I only added around 900++ of additional stuff because my kit only had specific number of items. I already have a plan but on the day that we were there I am not sure how to tell the guys what I wanted because I have not seen something like it yet. What I did was show them close representations of what I want via samples over the net, a combination of display, bookshelf and a small workstation. Through this they've computed the things that I would need, how many panels, L and door joints, foot pads. On the night we got it, we've already started to assemble them. Here's what we learned: 1. ...

PH TV Streaming

Image
HOOQ Image from Lifestyle Hub Tried this for a while but abandoned it eventually. I was able to get a free subscription from it via Globe but never returned. Customer service is supposed to be good, they did reply as soon as I reported an issue but it wasn't resolved until my sub was over. Said issue was the weird subs that was in Community (TV Series) that was often wrong. One episode even had Spanish subs on it! There are also shows that are horrible to watch, it jumps and sometimes look corrupted it felt like you're watching on a pirated CD.  I didn't get to see all of these corrected last time so I might be wrong as of writing.  Price: 149/month Watch for: American TV Series (Community, Powerless) and Pinoy Shows Iflix Been a customer for more than 6 months but have not paid a single cent to date. I just kept on purchasing my rewards from Grab. They have some titles that are also available in Netflix like Brooklyn Nine Nine, My He...
