Things I Learned From the Internets Today: IIII in watches

So a friend of mine sent me this photo:

I had that sudden itch that there is something wrong in this world and why is this expensive Omega watch bear "IIII" instead of "IV" ? Is this another one of those Mandela effect thingies that all along the Roman numerals that were taught to us as "IV" when we were kids were wrong and that "IIII" was the norm? A quick google search revealed that there are some who does have the same question as we, and the reason is fairly simple: for aesthetic purposes. It was said that watchmakers thought it would better with "VIII" on the other side of the watch and make it look more balanced. Well the reasoning is brilliant IMHO. I was able to see this photo earlier but never noticed that it wasn't "IV" before it was pointed out to me. I wonder how many teachers defend the use of "IV" when a too observant student notices this. But then what kind of kid sports an Omega watch anyway?
