Taiwan 2019 Part 4

+ Shifen Waterfall Park +

It was still cloudy, a bit humid but still tolerable. From our drop off point the waterfall was quite far. We had to walk through a couple of hanging bridges which is an experience by itself. These are wide enough to hold a lot of people but man, when it swings, IT SWINGS. I think I had a bit of motion sickness going on that I had to stop a couple of times when it moves a bit violently than I believe it should. If you're drunk I don't think you can make it at all!

We thought there weren't much tourists until we reached the spot where everyone is! There's also a lot of food options but since we can't stay too long, we were only able to get a few food and souvenirs. We also didn't attempt to take a close up photo of the waterfall because the viewing decks are full and does not look like it would empty any time soon.

When we walked back, one of my sisters had a brilliant idea to take another route and so we ended up getting lost, to which we took a cab to take us to Shifen Old Street since it's probably the next one in our Itinerary anyway. We just pointed where the lanterns looked it was coming from and he was able to take us there quickly. Walking is possible but we've walked so far from the trail that we decided the cab is the best way to go.

+Shifen Old Street +

Our driver found it funny we ended up there on our own. I think it's also a rip off when the cab driver asked us for 200NTD but yeah, at that time it was worth it.

Since Shifen is a popular destination, it too has become a "packaged"experience. Almost everyone offers the same Lantern flying gig we literally had to just pick anyone and do the same things what everyone else are currently doing.

First, pick whoever person stands near or has a banner with the pricing of lanterns. Once you decide whoever, you follow them to the store where they let you write on all sides of said lantern with ink and a brush. After which you are hailed off to a free spot where their people could take photos and even a video with your camera and/or your phone. They make you copy their moves for the video/photo opp which was admittedly corny until you let go of the lanterns and see it fly. The results on video are quite fine though.

+ Pingxi Train Station +

If you're tired of  the mass of people in Shifen, there's also Pingxi which basically offers almost the same things, only this one has a real working station that goes through it. We didn't spend too much time here, we just waited for the train to come and leave.

+ Keelung Night Market +

One of the top things to do in Taiwan are the night markets. We do have a lot near us, even the oldest ones but the one we visited was at Keelung's which is quite far from Taipei, but was made part of the IT. I thought it's great, at least we would get the experience a bit and not be overwhelmed by the huge ones.

We arrived sometime by 5 and the people kept on coming as the night went on. We were allowed a couple of hours to stay, which is ample enough for us to roam, which I believe we've gone quite far from where the night market was. We did get to try a lot of food, but for some reason my family is not snacky at that moment. I remembered we bought boba, dumplings, corn and not much else. If you're really into night markets, I don't think there's much to do here than some quick dinner. I believe everywhere else could probably be better because there aren't as much here than I expected.

After the night market, we headed home, which was very convenient because our driver dropped us off in front of our hotel. We exceeded an hour extra which we had to pay in cash to him (200 NTD), which is fine, given that we've covered a lot of far places today. I imagine trying to DIY this is possible but would be exhausting both physically and mentally, trying to keep up bus times since they don't have a direct train from Taipei to all those places. Overall the Klook private car has been worth it. If you're groups of people it would be less hassle for everyone to just sit back and forget about navigating for a while.
