Homework Ban

Just as I thought that E-vat was the stupidest thing that has ever happened to Pinoys, here's a neck to neck contender. The no Friday homework. The intention of this law is so that students may have more time to bond with the rest of their family during weekends due to teachers not giving them any homework. Even if the intention meant to be "good" as they say, I really don't see any sense. For one, students DON'T DO THEIR HOMEWORK ON WEEKENDS. They cram Monday morning. And what family bonding are they talking about? They'd (students) have more time in front of the computer or go malling with their friends! And why? Because their parents are either asleep the entire weekend, or are still keeping up with generating more income (that's because their salaries flow out of their pockets due to excessive taxations in every little thing there is) or do weekend chores their lazy fat ass kids don't bother do. Our student demographic are lazy and stupid enough ...

The Influence of Financial Books #4. Keep an Emergency Fund.

Image
Though there is a difference in every individual on how much and till when would this be, for us singles, that amounts to your cost of living for 6 months without work. Someone said 3 months would do but since this is an emergency fund, I might as well do the 6 months mark. This would also be your source for whatever inevitable thing happens-- accidents, medical issues, death of a relative or whatever emergency means to you (puhlease. that cute bag you saw on sale is not an emergency). And when that time comes, no matter how much you spent, you must save back till the last cent to ensure that you have more of it for the next incident. I'm around 30% of my emergency fund as of this writing and my goal is to be done with it before this year ends. And because this is an amount that I needed to have anytime it is needed, I plan to invest just half of it to RTBs and the other half at my disposal so I can benefit from the interests gained in the tenure of the coupon and still be able...

First Investing Ventures

Image
Though it's not about a month of immersing myself into this investing business through reading and guidance from various sources (Ed, Investor Juan, Peter Lynch, Alvin Tabañag, Larry Gamboa, Colayco, Investopedia, etc.) I have now started to take action to the tune of Mutual Funds and Stocks. Why Mutual Funds? I've only read (not done with it yet) Lynch's Beating the street and though he was not discouraging his readers too much, one would notice that he is saddened by too many people engaging themselves in Mutual Funds  than in stocks themselves. If you ask me my impression with MFs are a good investment (with it's risk factors of course), though when I talk about it to friends, I get straight to the point, telling them, 'it's for you who are lazy enough not to do homework'. So why would I even bother? Here are my reasons: 1. The fund is a mix (what I got anyway) of government securities and stocks. I know I can't afford a decent RTB that would gi...

Secret Recipe: A Tale of Two Visits (09.26.10)

Image
Visit #1 (09-26-10) I have an open mind when it comes to different tastes of Spaghetti and Tom Yum Spaghetti (200) would be a good competitor against my all time favorite pesto. It has this distinct taste I can't compare to what, with a slight pinch of spiciness I would love to replicate at home. Great for meat lovers and are tired of the red sauce spaghettis. What I'm not exactly a fan of is how they aren't exactly the best servers. It took a bit long for them to get to me so it really has not made my 1 hour lunch break that awesome anymore. Visit #2 (12-04-10) They had a treat this day to encorporate meal sets just like in Red Ribbon. I got their Satay which is just okay. The Black Forest cake, I am not really a fan of ever since but was able to finish anyway. I liked their other cakes but they seriously have to have a lot of them available so I won't have to make do with what they currently have. Find them at Megamall B, Atrium 2nd Floor.

The Influence of Financial Books #3 Stupid Money Habits

Image
1. Keeping money under your bed. If you have 100000 around the house it would still be 100000 when you are in your retirement age. That is, if your house never gets broken in, or consumed by fire or your bills not bedded by mice (Bad Boys 2). And even if it survives those, you yourself won't when inflation at that time cuts your supposedly 'savings' purchasing power. 2. Hoping that it will grow in the bank. The first time I've open an account at BDO (just last month), I've put in around 15k then added up a few amounts that on the same month. I am not sure yet when they compute the interest but it somehow gained 5pesos. I was joking the other day how I excited I was to have a passive 'income' of 5 pesos but seriously, what can you buy with it? Now even if they raise their interest rates every year, I don't think we can rely that much on the bank in giving us returns even if they get to use it for their businesses. 3. Not trying to save. Fine. So I...

When is rape, rape? (09.20.10)

Image
There was this news last week about this 12 year old girl, wickedly nicknamed Charice (a bit awkward I was about to use that name as title but thought twice about it so didn't bother) who was supposedly hired for a 'date' by the Mayor of Zambales. According to reports, her mom and a few police caught them, not in act (that would be so gross seeing your kid with an old guy) but when they got out of the room, to their much surprise. It was also said that a gay pimp made the deal between the two and the mom intends to file a case for both. She, and DSWD calls this as rape since we are talking about a minor here but somehow this is really awkward and weird of a rape case if you ask me. For one, if the gay pimped Charice, clearly our victim knows what the hell she is expected to do. Why the pimp have a hold of her number and why Charice even agreed to this 'job' is questionable. If we intend to be all optimistic about the innocence of our victim, we might as well im...

Korean Village: Not so Korean Experience (9.9.10)

Image
I may be shunned by most who have already eaten here, but I would like to be clear that I did have a chance to eat Korean before, though I'm not that sure of the authenticity of the taste, seeing Korean nationals eating there adds a thumbs up. Here however, it is noticeable that most are just regular Pinoys off for lunch. Here's what I think: Initial look of the restaurant misleads you to think how small the place is, until you get inside, where they have separate Smoking/No Smoking areas. I didn't get to try out their comfort rooms but it looks clean and inviting. Though friendly, somehow our waiter kept on forgetting we ordered Beef Stew. We were almost done with our Samgyupsal, we have to ask for it again just so they can serve it to us. But I was surprised that they are very attentive that when we are done, our waiter automatically served us our pineapple. A combination of Korean and Japanese dishes but the choices are very disappointing. How else w...

The Influence of Financial Books #2. Have a goal.

Image
One thing I noticed is when someone knows what they talk about finances, they ask you what are your goals. They always start with this and before I never put into thought why they ask for in the first place. It's so simple yet when you think of it, setting goals are way too deep of a question that while reading I found myself ashamed that I kept mine so vague. And then reading further, not only should I have specific goals, I should have an idea on how to achieve those goals. My goal when asked was as simple as my (need and) want to fix the house. It's my want to have it up to second floor but it's our need to have it fixed, especially because it's old, more so at the ceiling. I've talked about this with my family and they (sisters) kept on pressing for a second floor which in my own estimate, though I might be able to afford it (just a guess), I don't have urge to do so. Why? Because it's not needed. Why would I spend thousands of pesos to a house that ...

COMS: Mi Ga Korean Restaurant: The First Try

Image
Samgyupsal for the uninitiated is a serving of raw cuts that you cook on a grill, wrap it in lettuce with red bean paste, add a clove of garlic if you may and have it dipped in a bit of that sauce (or maybe sesame oil not sure) and eaten whole. The mixture is both bitter (from the greens) and spicy (garlic and red bean) that screams healthy food because of the lettuce meat ratio. It is also served with 7 side dishes of gimchi (cabbage, radish and pickle), egg, fried slices of sweet potato, greens.                  Jampong on the other hand is that huge bowl of seafood mania. And you know that that red broth isn’t just food coloring, that’s raw spicy broth that I would love to slurp on any rainy cold day. Yum yum. The serving of the Samgyupsal that we ordered are enough for two people (says so in the menu) but with Jampong, though said in the menu good for just 1 person is for us, a meal for an entire family...

Oh Ian! (09.10.10)

Image
Last night I dreamt of Ian, an old college friend who I haven't seen for the very long time. What happened was somewhere in a place not familiar, a cafeteria where I have to meet another friend for lunch (probably). But when I was walking with my tray, I noticed Ian there eating on his own and decided impromptu that Jin (the other friend I was about to meet) and I can see each other at anytime, but I couldn't with Ian so I walked towards him, sat across the table and began to talk like as if it was still college. I didn't know why I dreamt of him all of a sudden but somehow now I feel like I missed the guy. He was on his 20s when we were in first year, I was 17 by then. Unlike most who reach that age and still a freshman his reason was far more funnier than sad. Won't divulge what that was, not even sure if that was his only attempt in college but nonetheless, financial problems, to as much as I know about him isn't an issue. So when we parted ways, meaning, di...

The Influence of Financial Books #1. Get a scanner (09.07.10)

Image
You can afford a high-end cellphone, then why not a scanner? A scanner is a really powerful tool to not only have digital copies of your old photos back in the negative reliant camera days, but also a sure way to have all of your documents neatly compiled in whatever medium you choose, like burn them in a CD or upload them in a secure storage account of yours online. Not only would you save on a vault lease to keep your most important documents, you can make so many copies of that before something bad happens. Remember, filing for an affidavit of loss also requires you to have a copy of the original document, so atleast make an effort to do backup. I just bought a scanner last Saturday not because I follow everything I read from a book but because I wanted to be worry free of the inevitable. You'd never know when you'd need those documents when something happens. Like the House Mortgage or whatever certificates that only you have a copy of. I've been wanting to own one b...

Major Mistakes

I've been trying for days to write something coherent about the bus incident but I can't produce something that won't be so long you get bored. We've heard it all but for the sake of me keeping my thoughts in this blog, here is what I thought of the things that happened for the past weeks: -- It's been weeks since the incident and we still can't get over it. Primarily because HK nationals are eyeing on us giving Pinoys their own dose of racism. Pinoys always cry foul over the littlest of things. Like a little slur here and there. And in such things that granted majority of us didn't really have a hand of, still, who are we to haplessly cry over spilled milk. It's done, it's over. Get over it. The HK Nationals are mourning. We shouldn't be the ones asking for sympathy. And please. We shouldn't give guns to pussies. We all know what that results into. -- Another whiny guy was his brother who kept on crying over his confiscated gun, resultin...

What I'm Up To Lately

Involves a lot of dreaming. I miss out on a lot of posts obviously, like me and my sister's first time experience at Mi Ga Korean restaurant, or that Major major thingy two weeks ago or even the last movie I saw that doesn't make a lot of sense. And why am I like this? For the first time last last week I've prepared myself a ledger only I can understand. I can't remember how we do it back in Accounting but nevertheless it had the same purpose. I do not intend anybody to see it anyway. I even had a password for that file. And when I've tallied every expense and income I've ever generated since the last week of June (till last week of August), I'm dumbfounded. I never thought in not more than 2 months I have this amount of cash and I have no idea where it all went. I know I bought a ref for 16k, two car tires for 5k, I've also loaned my cousin 5k for her son's hospitalization, and another 4k donation for her father's accident (plus 1k for my fathe...

What do when your phone lost signal

Image
Symptoms: No signal, phone gets drained quickly. 1. Don't panic. If you are in the middle of a conversation with someone important, make sure that you get back to them (using a relative or friend's phone since you can't use yours silly) to say sorry that your phone really can't find a signal. If that doesn't work, try saying your phone was lobat. The reason why this happens is because your phone is dedicating all of it's resources in finding a signal. 2. If after turning your phone on and off for a couple of times and changing locations while you're at it doesn't work, then you don't need to email for support. I did and the customer service guy said the same thing. Goody. He's paid for telling me what any sane customer knows how to do. He even replied late. 3. Visit one of your telcom's branches and make sure that you bring your simcard and that huger card thingy where your sim came from. 4. Tell them, even before they get to say their piece,...
